Apple has unveiled its latest advancements in wearable technology with the introduction of the Apple Watch Series 12 and the Watch Ultra 4. Boasting new features, improved functionality, and stylish designs, these smartwatches promise to elevate personal health monitoring and user experience. Let's delve into the highlights of these state-of-the-art devices.
The Apple Watch Series 12, available in 42mm and 46mm sizes, and the Ultra 4 both feature the newly developed S11 chip. This upgrade brings enhanced optical and electrical heart rate sensors, paired with an enriched Health Sensing System. Apple asserts that these wearables provide the most precise heart rate monitoring ever seen in a smartwatch, a claim supported by studies involving over 1,000 participants, highlighting their superiority over competing brands.
One of the standout features in these new models is the ability to measure heart rate every five seconds, with heart rate variability being recorded 24 times more often than in previous versions. Additionally, users can access a new Readiness score ranging from 0 to 10, which helps gauge their preparedness for different training intensities.
In conjunction with these metrics, the updated Health app introduces a Health Age feature that analyzes various data points, including VO₂ max, resting heart rate, HRV, and sleep quality. This metric informs users whether their Health Age is younger or older than their actual age, allowing for better health insights.
A noteworthy innovation in these smartwatches is the inclusion of a built-in microphone which powers a feature called Audio Intelligence. This functionality is particularly beneficial for those with hearing difficulties, alerting them to significant sounds nearby. Furthermore, it can aid in recalling parts of conversations, and the new Siri app can summarize discussions and title key points automatically. Music enthusiasts will appreciate Shazam's ability to identify songs playing in the environment.
Importantly, the Health Age feature isn't limited to just new models; Apple plans to roll it out to older Apple Watch iterations later this year, starting in the U.S.
Battery performance has also seen notable improvements, especially with the Watch Ultra 4 boasting a remarkable 50 hours of regular usage—an increase of 8 hours or 19% over its predecessor. In Low Power Mode, the watch can function for up to 84 hours, 12 hours more than the Ultra 3. The Apple Watch Series 12 provides 24 hours in standard use and retains the 38-hour battery life in Low Power Mode, while outdoor workout battery life has improved to 10 hours, representing a 25% enhancement over the previous generation.
Design-wise, Apple Watch Series 12 offers three case materials and eight finishes, including new Dark Bronze, Black, and Light Gold options, in addition to Space Grey. It features Ceramic Shield 2 glass, which is said to be 60% tougher than the previous Ion-X glass. Notably, titanium models are crafted from 100% recycled materials.
The Ultra 4 is constructed from Grade 5 titanium available in Natural Titanium and Black Titanium finishes. Both models return ceramic options, with the Series 12 available in Pearl White and Night Blue.
Moreover, Apple has introduced new bands, including the Trail Loop, Alpine Loop, and Ocean Bands, each in various attractive colors, providing users with multiple styling options.
The Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 are now available for pre-order, with sales starting on September 18. Prices start at $399/€449 for the Series 12 and $799/€899 for the Ultra 4.
