Samsung Enhances SmartThings with Direct IKEA Integration for a Smarter Home

Recently, Samsung made it easier to connect your SmartThings and IKEA smart home networks. Previously, users required both a SmartThings hub and an IKEA hub, but now, IKEA smart devices can be integrated directly with the SmartThings hub, simplifying the setup process.

Currently, there are 25 compatible IKEA smart devices, including a remote control, smart bulbs, plugs, temperature and humidity sensors, air quality monitors, motion detectors, door sensors, and water leak sensors.

For example, IKEA offers an air quality sensor that tracks temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide levels, and light intensity. Users can create an automation that activates a Samsung air conditioner’s dehumidification mode when the sensor detects high humidity levels.

The scroll wheel remote is particularly noteworthy, according to Samsung. Users can easily adjust the brightness and color temperature of smart lights by rotating the wheel. This functionality also extends to other devices, such as smart blinds that can be precisely positioned using the wheel.

“By connecting IKEA devices to SmartThings, even first-time smart home users can enjoy a familiar and easy connectivity experience without financial burden. SmartThings will continue to expand its ecosystem through partnerships, enabling more consumers to enjoy a seamless and convenient smart home experience within the SmartThings ecosystem regardless of brand or communication protocol,” stated Jaeyeon Jung, Executive Vice President of SmartThings, AI Platform Center at Samsung Electronics.

It's worth noting that a few years ago, Samsung and Google enhanced their ecosystems by adding support for each other, showcasing the benefits of industry standards. This latest IKEA announcement is possible thanks to the Matter protocol, which operates over Thread mesh networks.
