YouTube TV Introduces Customizable Multiview Feature and Tests New Live Ad Formats

Let's begin with YouTube TV, Google's live broadcast television service available exclusively in the U.S. Users may already be familiar with its Multiview feature, which allows them to watch two, three, or even four channels simultaneously. This capability serves practical purposes, particularly during busy sports seasons when viewers wish to monitor multiple matches at once.

Initially, Google offered Multiview with pre-defined configurations curated for users. However, the platform is now rolling out a fully customizable version that allows users to select their desired streams. The reasoning behind the delayed introduction of this feature remains unclear; it may have to do with the technical challenges of processing and displaying multiple transmission streams. Nevertheless, the feature is now available as part of a server-side rollout, so users can expect to see it on their devices soon.

In addition to the customizable Multiview, YouTube is also testing new advertising formats for live streams. Users consuming YouTube live streams on TV or desktop may have noticed what Google refers to as "side-by-side" ads. These advertisements appear at the bottom of the screen beside the live stream and mute the audio without interrupting the content playing in the background.

This approach could be beneficial, allowing viewers to stay engaged with the action, depending on the nature of the content. However, the lack of audio may detract from the viewing experience in certain situations. Regardless of individual preferences, Google has begun experimenting with this side-by-side ad format on mobile devices as well, indicating an expansion of this feature.
