LG Partners with Nvidia to Develop Next-Generation AI Robotics and Autonomous Vehicle Technologies

In a groundbreaking collaboration, LG Corp. has teamed up with Nvidia to enhance their AI capabilities, paving the way for innovative advancements in robotics and autonomous vehicles. This partnership was solidified with a memorandum of understanding signed by LG Chairman and CEO Kwang Mo Koo and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang at Nvidia’s headquarters in Santa Clara, California.

One of the most exciting announcements from this partnership is the planned unveiling of a humanoid robot in the first quarter of 2027. This state-of-the-art bipedal robot will leverage Nvidia’s Jetson Thor for advanced on-board computing and the Isaac GR00T open reasoning humanoid foundation model, setting a new benchmark in robotics technology.

The Nvidia Jetson Thor provides an impressive 2,070 TFLOPs of computing power.

In a more immediate application, LG will launch CLOiD, a wheeled robot designed for its washing machine manufacturing facility in Tennessee later this year. This robot will serve as a testing ground, improving its functionalities over time before being implemented in LG’s global production lines. LG envisions a wide range of potential uses for CLOiD in industrial settings, commercial spaces, and residential environments.

Additionally, LG is preparing to build a reference AI data center set to launch in the first half of 2027, based on Nvidia’s Vera Rubin technology. This initiative will lay the groundwork for the establishment of an “LG AI Factory” in Cheonan, Chungcheongnam-do, by early 2028, boasting a powerful 80 MW of computing capacity. This factory aims to train proprietary AI models for various applications, showcasing LG's capabilities in creating robust AI solutions.

Part of LG's “One LG” strategy, this endeavor will utilize components from different segments of the LG conglomerate, including batteries and sensors from LG Energy Solution, LG Innotek, and LG Electronics.

The Nvidia Drive Hyperion poised for next-generation autonomous vehicles.

LG is also venturing into the realm of self-driving vehicles, incorporating Nvidia’s Drive Hyperion technology into its AI-Defined Vehicles. The aim is to provide global OEMs with a seamless integration of self-driving capabilities and advanced in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems.

Interestingly, this initiative comes shortly after rival Samsung announced the launch of its Robotics eXperience division, targeting advanced robotics solutions and automotive electronics through its Harman subsidiary.

Kwang Mo Koo expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “As our discussions have advanced, our missions within the AI Factory and Physical AI have crystallized. We are on an accelerated path to disperse AI innovations through industry-leading standards.”

Complementing this, Nvidia’s Jensen Huang remarked, “The defining opportunity of physical AI is to grant each machine the capacity to comprehend the real world, reason, and act safely alongside humans—revolutionizing everyday interactions from homes and factories to roads. Through our collaboration, we are harnessing LG's prowess in manufacturing and engineering with Nvidia's technology to spearhead the future of robotics, AI factories, and autonomous vehicles.”
