Samsung's Galaxy Buds Gain FDA Approval for Innovative Hearing Aid Feature

Samsung is taking a significant step forward in health technology with the recent FDA approval of the Hearing Aid feature for its Galaxy Buds. This approval positions Samsung's wireless earbuds as a valuable tool for individuals with hearing difficulties, making hearing support more accessible than ever.

The US Food and Drug Administration has officially cleared the Galaxy Buds' Hearing Aid feature as an over-the-counter (OTC) solution for people aged 18 and above. This development provides an alternative to traditional and often costly hearing aids, specifically catering to those with mild to moderate hearing impairment. Such users typically struggle to engage in conversations, especially in noisy settings.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 1.5 billion individuals suffer from some degree of hearing loss, a figure that is anticipated to rise to 2.5 billion by 2050. Barriers such as high costs, societal stigma, and limited access to healthcare have left many without the support they need. Samsung aims to address these issues collectively with its innovative approach.

Using Galaxy Buds discreetly in public enables users to avoid drawing unwanted attention while benefiting from rapid and user-friendly hearing evaluations. This process not only reduces expenses but also enhances accessibility for those with hearing impairments.

Hearing Aid Integration in Samsung Health

Once a user completes the designated hearing assessment—utilizing clinical-grade pure-tone audiometry—the Samsung Health app generates a personalized audiogram that highlights the user's specific hearing deficits in each ear. Based on the results, users' hearing loss is classified as mild, moderate, severe, or profound.

Following the hearing test, the Hearing Aid feature customizes audio amplification to match the user's unique hearing profile, enhancing the necessary frequencies. Additionally, the Galaxy Buds come equipped with sophisticated technologies like noise cancellation and beamforming, which help to isolate sounds coming from the user's direction.

Currently, the Hearing Aid feature is supported only by the Galaxy Buds3 Pro and the Buds4 Pro, but future iterations of Galaxy Buds Pro are expected to include this feature by default.
