The pace of updates from Chinese automotive manufacturers is impressive. Just as drivers were beginning to appreciate the original specs of the Denza Z9 GT, BYD has thrown a curveball by introducing significant enhancements. The latest updates transform this sleek station wagon into a powerhouse, delivering performance figures that rival those of race cars, rather than a conventional family vehicle.

The all-electric, all-wheel-drive iteration of the updated Denza Z9 GT now boasts an astonishing 850 kW output, equivalent to 1,140 hp. This marks an increase of 188 hp from last year's already impressive model, positioning this electric wagon alongside some of the world's most expensive supercars.

Its tri-motor assembly includes a 230 kW motor at the front and two 310 kW motors at the rear, allowing this sizable vehicle to reach top speeds of 270 km/h. Denza likely holds the title of the world's fastest luxury vehicle on wheels.

For those who are not yet ready to switch entirely to electric, BYD has also updated the plug-in hybrid variant. It now features a robust 63.82 kWh battery pack, nearly doubling the capacity of its predecessor, enabling a pure electric range of 400 km according to the CLTC cycle.

This plug-in hybrid combines a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with three electric motors: one that delivers 152 kW, a front electric motor contributing 200 kW, and two rear motors each producing 220 kW. The total output is rated at a remarkable 858 horsepower, propelling the large wagon to a speed of 230 km/h.

Exterior modifications are subtle, yet significant. Notably, a new LiDAR sensor has been shifted from the fenders to a 'watchtower' position atop the windshield, enhancing the vehicle's view of the road to support its advanced self-driving capabilities.

The new paint color, Fjord Green, adds an eco-friendly touch for the speed enthusiasts who appreciate sophistication. Additionally, a new blue indicator light signals when the driver assistance systems are engaged, informing others that the vehicle is managing some of the driving responsibilities.

The Denza Z9 GT is quite large, measuring 5,195 mm in length, 1,990 mm in width, and 1,490 mm in height, with a wheelbase stretching 3,125 mm. While it boasts an impressive interior space, it also carries a hefty weight, with the rear-wheel-drive variant tipping the scales at 2,700 kg.

The interior of the refreshed Z9 remains a haven for tech enthusiasts, featuring unique attributes like dual refrigerators—one located in the front and a larger one in the rear. It also retains entertaining features like the 'crab walk' and 'compass turn,' allowing the vehicle to move laterally or spin in place. While these may seem impractical for tight parking situations, they offer a great way to impress neighbors.

The pricing for this remarkable vehicle remains competitive, ranging between €43,000 and €60,000 depending on the selected trim. While it isn't the cheapest option on the market, it remains about half the price of its German luxury counterparts.
