OpenAI to Launch AI-Powered Earbuds as First Hardware Product

According to a Chinese tipster on Weibo, OpenAI is preparing to unveil its first hardware offering: a pair of AI-powered earbuds. This development comes after the company chose to reduce its hardware ambitions, likely due to escalating hardware costs.

OpenAI's first hardware product will be AI-powered earbuds

Initially, there were rumors that OpenAI was considering a small pendant or pen, reflecting CEO Sam Altman's vision for a device that would be more "peaceful and calm" than a smartphone. This speculation gained traction after OpenAI hired Apple's former chief designer, Jony Ive.

However, it seems plans have shifted. The company has opted for a simpler design: AI-powered earbuds, tentatively named "Dime." Though further details remain scarce, the product is expected to launch by the end of this year. Additionally, once the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) shortage is resolved, OpenAI plans to introduce a more advanced version of the earbuds.
