Google Messages is set to enhance user experience with an innovative feature called "Tap to Edit" for Smart Replies. This new option aims to provide Android users with greater flexibility when responding to messages, allowing them to edit suggested replies before hitting send. Google Messages to Introduce Tap to Edit for Smart Replies
The much-anticipated feature is currently in the beta phase and has not yet rolled out widely. Once available, users can navigate to Settings > Suggestions to activate either of the following options:
- Tap to Send: This option will function as the current Smart Reply feature—users can tap on a Smart Reply bubble to instantly send the message to the recipient.
- Tap to Edit: This new feature allows users to tap on a Smart Reply bubble, which will then populate the text into the message compose field. From there, users can modify the text as needed before sending it off as part of their message.
By opting for Tap to Edit, users will no longer have to worry about sending a response they didn't intend, like “Sounds good,” without the chance to review it first.
An Essential Tool for Android Users
To check if Tap to Edit is available on your device, open the Google Messages app and tap on your profile picture located at the far right of the search bar. Proceed to Messages settings > Suggestions. If you see only a toggle for Smart Reply, then the new Tap to Edit feature hasn't reached your device yet. Conversely, if you can toggle both Tap to Send and Tap to Edit, it signifies that you now have access to this exciting addition.
Keep in mind that you can enable only one of these options at a time, as they are designed to be mutually exclusive. This optimization ensures that users choose between instantly sending a Smart Reply or taking a moment to edit and personalize their response.
Personal Thoughts on the New Feature
Personally, I find the Tap to Edit feature to be a significant upgrade. It marries the convenience of quick AI-generated replies with the ability to personalize those messages before sending. Although the feature isn't currently available on my Pixel 6 Pro running Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2, I eagerly anticipate its release.
