Surge in Unsupervised Tesla Robotaxis in Texas Ahead of Cybercab Launch

As Tesla prepares to roll out its ambitious Cybercab driverless taxi service in Austin, Texas, the number of unsupervised autonomous vehicles operating in the region has seen a remarkable increase. This surge comes on the heels of Tesla's recent announcement regarding the imminent launch, sparking interest and speculation about the company's future in the autonomous vehicle market.

A recent report highlights that although the number of unsupervised Tesla vehicles in Texas was dwindling throughout the spring and summer, fresh data from Robotaxitracker.com reveals that the count has jumped to over 150 vehicles in just the past week. Ethan McKanna, the site’s creator, notes that this spike may also reflect how data is collected and analyzed, suggesting there could have been more vehicles operating than previously reported.

During a recent earnings call, Elon Musk conveyed optimism, stating that the Robotaxi program would scale rapidly as the launch of the Cybercab approaches, although he did not disclose specific figures. Insights from insiders suggest that Tesla is purposefully delaying the rollout of its driverless Model Y vehicles in Austin, anticipating that the Cybercab will expand quickly and be road-ready in the upcoming quarter.

Despite this recent climb in unsupervised Robotaxis, Tesla continues to trail behind competitors like Waymo, which is already operating over 300 autonomous vehicles in Austin and approximately 4,000 across 10 cities. Furthermore, with only a fraction of the collective mileage compared to Waymo’s impressive 220 million miles logged since 2020, there are still questions about whether Tesla is fully prepared to compete in this critical landscape.
