Galaxy Z Fold8 Teardown Reveals Mixed Impressions on Repairability

Source: Date:

The Galaxy Z Fold8 has made waves with its innovative design and flexible display, but how does it hold up under the scrutiny of a teardown? Recently, iFixit conducted a thorough examination of Samsung's flagship foldable device, revealing both its strengths and weaknesses in terms of repairability. While the phone demonstrates some improvements over its predecessor, the Z Fold7, it still presents challenges for those looking to maintain or repair it. Here’s what the teardown uncovered.

In the teardown, the Z Fold8 received a repairability score of 4 out of 10. While this isn’t particularly impressive in the context of the smartphone market, it does represent a slight improvement from last year’s model. For those who prefer a quick summary, here are the main findings of the teardown.

One of the significant drawbacks highlighted in the teardown is the difficulty in replacing the folding screen. During the process, the host experienced damage to the plastic bezels, which led to the destruction of the OLED layer, rendering it completely inoperable. Additionally, the phone's IP48 rating proved ineffective against dust, which can infiltrate the hinge and put vital components at risk.

On a more positive note, the teardown revealed that Samsung has made some user-friendly design choices. For instance, the use of standard Phillips screws throughout the device enhances accessibility during repairs. The back plate is relatively easy to remove, and the USB-C port isn’t soldered, simplifying replacement procedures. Moreover, the batteries come equipped with pull tabs that aid in removal, although caution is necessary as they can bend easily.
