Samsung CEO Envisions the Future of AI: Emphasizing Human Understanding

Source: Date:

Samsung has officially announced that the next Galaxy Unpacked event will take place on July 22 in London, hinting at the introduction of the wide Galaxy Z Fold8. However, the event will not solely focus on foldables. Samsung Electronics CEO and President TM Roh has penned an editorial titled “AI Doesn’t Need To Outthink You. It Needs To Understand You,” providing insight into the company's future strategy.

The editorial underscores that a sophisticated AI alone is insufficient; it needs to be integrated within a cohesive ecosystem, such as the network of SmartThings that Samsung has developed. Roh illustrates this point, stating, “sleep tracked by your watch shapes tomorrow’s schedule.”

AI has evolved beyond mere information gathering. We are entering an agentic era where AI can perform actions on behalf of users, although final decisions must always rest with the user. Roh writes, “People need to know what AI is doing for them and remain in control.”

Roh emphasizes Samsung's responsibility in protecting user data. Knox safeguards not only the information on your device but also the data exchanged between devices. Crucially, the most sensitive information will be stored locally on the device.

According to Roh, smartphones will play a central role in future AI interactions as they are the devices closest to users. He even highlights foldable phones, suggesting they provide a broader platform for engagement.

Beyond smartphones, smartwatches monitor essential health metrics throughout the day. Smart home devices, including TVs and refrigerators, can also deliver valuable insights into daily life. Additionally, innovative form factors such as smart glasses are emerging, paving the way for new interactions with AI.

Roh concludes, “The question that opens the next era is not who has the smartest AI, but who understands people best, and turns that understanding into experiences they can trust.”
