Nintendo is implementing a significant update to the Switch 2, making user-replaceable batteries available for new units starting this autumn. This change will apply to units sold across all 27 EU member states, as well as Norway, Switzerland, the UK, Saudi Arabia, Oman, the UAE, and South Africa.
Nintendo Switch 2 updated battery specificationsThe updated version will feature a 5,172mAh battery, slightly less capacity than the previous model's 5,220mAh cell, and the console will be 10 grams heavier, tipping the scales at 401 grams. Additionally, the Joy-Con 2 controllers will also receive user-replaceable batteries.

This shift towards user-replaceable batteries aligns with new EU regulations, specifically the Right to Repair Directive, effective July 31, and the EU Batteries Regulation, which mandates that devices must have easily removable batteries by February 2027.
Nintendo aims to stay ahead of these regulations and will also introduce updated versions of its Switch 2 Pro, N64, and GameCube controllers with removable batteries. The new Switch 2 Pro controller is expected to launch this winter and will feature a battery with a 16% smaller capacity than its predecessor.
