Chinese technology firm Xiaomi has unveiled significant updates to its crossover lineup, introducing a new and more affordable entry-level version of its electric SUV, the YU7. This addition is aimed directly at the market leader, the Tesla Model Y, by providing a competitive price point and enhanced driving range.
Company executives shared insights into the challenges of the current market. CEO Lei Jun candidly acknowledged that the initial pricing strategy for the vehicle was inadequate. When the SUV was first launched in June, the price gap between its base version and Tesla's popular crossover was only RMB 10,000 ($1,450). Management recognized that this slight financial advantage was not enough to persuade potential buyers to choose Xiaomi over Tesla.

In response, the company undertook a complete overhaul of its product lineup. The previous base model has now been rebranded as the 'Long Range Edition,' while a new 'Standard Edition' has been introduced at a starting price of RMB 233,500 ($32,400). This change increases the price gap between the base Xiaomi YU7 and the Tesla Model Y to a more significant RMB 30,000 ($4,350).
The specifications of this new entry-level trim indicate a strategic approach to capturing a larger market share. The YU7 Standard Edition features a single rear-mounted electric motor producing 235 kW (315 horsepower). It is powered by a 73.0 kWh lithium LFP battery from supplier CATL, utilizing an advanced 752V electrical architecture. By eliminating the secondary motor, the vehicle has shed 254 lbs compared to its predecessor, achieving a total curb weight of 4,850 lbs.

Per the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC), this new entry-level variant boasts an impressive range of 400 miles on a full charge, surpassing the base rear-wheel-drive Tesla Model Y, which is rated at 368 miles. The YU7 includes premium features typically reserved for higher-end models, such as an active smart chassis with dual-chamber air suspension, variable dampers, LiDAR, and a high-performance Nvidia computing platform. Owners also benefit from lifetime access to highway navigation, city driving assist, and automated parking functions without any subscription fees.
The introduction of this budget-friendly variant comes at a crucial time for Xiaomi, as customer orders for the SUV have started to decline following the resolution of its initial backlog, allowing Tesla to regain its sales lead. However, the brand is not only focused on high-volume models. Alongside the economical variant, Xiaomi has also launched a performance model called the YU7 GT to showcase its technical prowess.

The track-oriented YU7 GT starts at RMB 389,900 ($54,100). Enthusiasts can enhance the vehicle with a 'GT Sports Kit' for a promotional price of RMB 14,000 ($2,100). The fully equipped version costs RMB 429,900 ($63,200). The vehicle measures 197.4 inches long, 79 inches wide, and 62.9 inches high, with a comfortable 118-inch wheelbase. This premium variant features a proprietary electric motor capable of reaching up to 28,000 revolutions per minute. The dual-motor system, with a front-mounted motor, delivers a combined output of 738 kW, or 990 horsepower.
This tremendous power propels the SUV from 0 to 62 mph in just 2.92 seconds, with a top speed of 186 mph. To validate its performance, the engineering team dedicated two years to refining the chassis in Germany, resulting in the vehicle setting a new record for production SUVs at the Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit with a lap time of 7 minutes and 22.755 seconds, beating the previous luxury record by 14 seconds.

The performance model incorporates an 897V architecture paired with a 101.7 kWh battery, allowing for a range of 354 miles in just 15 minutes of ultra-fast charging. Under local standards, the total driving distance reaches 438 miles. Inside, the cabin offers premium comfort with 2.3 square meters of Alcantara upholstery, massage functionality on all seats, sound insulation glass, and a 25-speaker audio system featuring active noise cancellation.
Xiaomi has successfully delivered 232,000 units of the YU7 series since its debut and has surpassed a total of 600,000 shipments in less than two years of operations in the automotive industry. With the new pricing strategy and the introduction of high-performance flagship options, the company appears to be well-positioned to achieve its ambitious goal of delivering 550,000 units by the end of 2026.
