Android users may soon enjoy a feature reminiscent of Apple’s iPhone NameDrop, which was launched with iOS 17. This functionality allows users to effortlessly share contact information and files by simply bringing their devices close together. Google is reportedly working on a similar feature branded as "Tap to Share."
Tap to Share: A Possible Pixel Exclusive Launch
According to Android Authority, Google has activated the user interface for Tap to Share, revealing a card that outlines its capabilities. The card states, "Instantly share contact info, photos, videos, links, location, and more," indicating a wide range of sharing possibilities for Android users once the feature is launched.
To utilize Tap to Share, users must follow these simple steps, as detailed in an illustration featuring two individuals with their Android phones overlapped:
- Unlock your phone.
- Align the top edges of both devices, ensuring that both screens face upwards.
- Hold the phones together until they illuminate.
Utilizing Tap to Share Between Android Devices
If users encounter difficulties, they can alternatively try positioning the phones back to back. It’s critical for the phones to overlap correctly since the functionality relies on Near Field Communication (NFC), and the placement of the NFC antenna can differ by device model.

Understanding the NFC Connectivity of Tap to Share
The Tap to Share feature utilizes NFC technology, which allows compatible devices to communicate when in proximity. On certain Android models, the NFC antenna is located beneath the camera module, making it essential for devices to be aligned correctly for successful communication. In contrast, iPhones have their NFC antenna situated on the top edge, near the camera.
While Google has not officially announced the release date for Tap to Share, there is speculation that it will initially be available exclusively on Pixel models.
