The Latest Ins and Outs of iOS 26.4 Beta 4: Siri 2.0 Breaks Records
On Monday, Apple unveiled iOS 26.4 Beta 4, which, despite the anticipation, doesn't bring the much-anticipated features for Siri 2.0. Users eagerly await updates in iOS 26.5, especially considering the extensive delay Siri 2.0 has faced. In fact, Apple’s digital assistant has now surpassed the infamous AirPower wireless charger as the longest-running example of vaporware in the company's history.
Siri 2.0 Surpasses AirPower in Apple Vaporware Timeline
AirPower met its demise due to Apple's inability to safely configure its coils. Initially announced on September 12, 2017, it was ultimately canceled on March 29, 2019, after a life span of 563 days. The product was touted to wirelessly charge an iPhone 8, an iPhone X, an Apple Watch Series 3, and an AirPods case all at once. In contrast, Siri 2.0 was first introduced on June 10, 2024, during WWDC 24, and its release is currently delayed until after iOS 26.5 and iOS 27.
As of now, Siri 2.0 has been pending for 638 days since its announcement, setting a new record, surpassing AirPower's 563 days. If the rollout of all features promised at WWDC 24 aligns with the release of iOS 27, this record could extend to approximately 826 days for Siri 2.0.
New Features and Changes in iOS 26.4 Beta 4
Apple's latest release, iOS 26.4 Beta 4, introduces several new features. Notably, in Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size, the option formerly known as Reduce Highlighting Effects has been renamed to Reduce Bright Effects. This adjustment aims to "minimize highlighting and flashing when interacting with onscreen elements such as buttons or the keyboard," effectively reducing the shimmering Liquid Glass effect on buttons.
Additionally, the RCS end-to-end encryption Beta has been removed from iOS 26.4 Beta 4, a move that aligns with Apple's earlier announcements regarding the feature's delayed launch. However, new emoji have been introduced, including a trombone, treasure chest, distorted face, hairy creature resembling Bigfoot, fight cloud, orca, and landslide. Some existing emojis also received updates, with new skin tones added for wrestling figures and dancers with bunny ears, along with a gender-neutral version for the ballet dancer emoji.
To install the update, simply navigate to Settings > General > Software Update and follow the prompts. Notably, iOS 26.4 Beta 4 and iPadOS 26.4 Beta 4 are the first Beta versions available for the new iPhone 17e and iPad Air M4.
