BYD Unveils Plans for an Ultra-Fast Charging Network in Global Markets

The Chinese automotive giant BYD has announced an ambitious plan to establish a vast "Flash Charging" network. Li Yunfei, a senior executive at the company, indicated that this technology is expected to launch in international markets by the end of 2026. BYD aims to transform itself from merely a car manufacturer to a provider of the future's charging infrastructure, akin to modern gas stations, with the goal of making charging as quick as a coffee break.

The innovation behind this rapid charging capability lies in an ingenious design. Each charging station functions not just as a plug but as a sizeable battery, storing between 200 and 300 kWh of energy. By keeping energy on-site, the chargers can manage their power load without overburdening the local electric grid when multiple vehicles are charging simultaneously. This strategy allows the creation of a high-speed network without necessitating a complete overhaul of existing city power infrastructures.

BYD is working according to a strict timeline, intending to have 20,000 charging stations operational across China by December 2026. Approximately 18,000 of these will be installed at existing venues through strategic partnerships, ensuring that chargers are conveniently located where people already frequent. In urban areas, the company aspires for drivers to be within a distance of 3.1 miles of a charger 90% of the time, with the remaining 2,000 stations positioned along major highways.

As of March 2026, BYD has already completed 4,239 charging stations. They expect the first 1,000 highway stations to be available to drivers before May 1, 2026. These chargers boast impressive power capabilities, utilizing a 1,500 kW system that operates at 1,000V.

When paired with BYD’s latest vehicles, such as the Denza Z9 GT and the Yangwang U7, the results are remarkable. Equipped with second-generation Blade Batteries, these electric cars can recharge from 10% to 70% in just 5 minutes when using a Flash Charging station. A near-full charge, going from 10% to 97%, takes only about 9 minutes under standard conditions.

Cold weather often hampers electric vehicle charging speed; however, BYD claims to have addressed this issue. Testing their new battery system in extreme cold conditions, they found that after being exposed to -22°F for a full day, the battery still managed to charge from 20% to 97% in just 12 minutes. This advancement is particularly significant for drivers in colder regions like Northern Europe and North America, where winter conditions typically complicate charging.

BYD is aggressively promoting this technology due to its rapidly growing global business. In February 2026, the company sold over 100,000 vehicles outside of China, marking a 41.4% increase compared to the previous year. Although domestic sales have tapered off slightly, global demand for BYD's electric vehicles remains strong, with a goal to sell 1.3 million units internationally in 2026, up from 1.05 million in 2025.

To support this expansion, the Flash Charging network will be developed alongside vehicle production. BYD is constructing factories in Thailand, Brazil, and Hungary, with plans to deploy its high-speed chargers in these regions first. By localizing both car and charger production, BYD is creating an integrated ecosystem, facilitating the transition for consumers from gasoline vehicles to electric models.

BYD is now innovating this concept further, providing a faster, more affordable, and locally-manufactured solution.
