After a two-year interval, Sony has introduced its latest flagship wireless earbuds, the WF-1000XM6, designed to replace the WF-1000XM5. Sony asserts that these earbuds represent its finest audio technology yet.

So, what’s new?

The WF-1000XM6 is equipped with an upgraded version of the Integrated Processor V2, which now processes audio at 32-bit depth, an improvement from the previous 24-bit in the XM5. This enhancement aims to deliver superior clarity, dynamic range, and detail.

The earbuds feature 8.4mm dynamic drivers and have been meticulously tuned by Sony’s acoustic engineers in collaboration with various Sony Music-affiliated recording studios. They support multiple audio codecs, including AAC, SBC, LC3, and LDAC, in addition to Sony's DSEE Extreme, which employs AI technology to upscale compressed audio files.

For users who enjoy customizing their audio experience, the Sony Sound Connect app now includes an updated 10-band equalizer. The earbuds also feature multipoint Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity, Auracast, Fast Pair, and Swift Pair capabilities, along with support for 360 Reality Audio with head tracking.

The key innovation in the XM6 is the QN3e noise-canceling chip, which is adapted from the over-the-ear WH-1000XM6, providing 25% better noise reduction compared to its predecessors, particularly in the mid-to-high frequency range.

The adaptive noise-canceling system evaluates external sounds and adjusts audio playback and noise cancellation in real time based on the wearing position. This improved ANC employs two additional outward-facing microphones, totaling four microphones per earbud.

Additionally, Sony claims that the ambient mode on the XM6 now provides a more natural and lifelike auditory experience. The internal antennas have been enlarged by 1.5 times compared to the XM5, offering enhanced connectivity stability.

In terms of battery life, the earbuds deliver up to 8 hours of use, similar to the XM5 generation. The charging case allows for two full recharges, resulting in a total battery life of 24 hours. The XM6 also retains wireless charging functionality and features IPX4 water resistance.
