The electric vehicle market is evolving rapidly, especially in China, where new models are launched almost daily. Li Auto, a prominent automaker, has unveiled its latest creation, the Li Auto L9 Livis. Unlike a mere refresh of its popular SUV, the L9 Livis serves as a flagship vehicle, boasting some of the most advanced technology currently available. The original L9 was a tremendous success upon its release in 2022, but rising competition from brands like Huawei and Zeekr has prompted Li Auto to elevate its ambitions.

The L9 Livis is categorized as an Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV). It employs electric motors to drive the wheels while incorporating a small gasoline engine that functions as a generator. This design is increasingly favored in China as it alleviates concerns about range anxiety, allowing the vehicle to recharge its battery while in motion. The new Livis variant amplifies this concept with a luxurious twist, targeting buyers seeking an exceptional driving experience.

As the automotive landscape shifts, criteria for evaluating vehicles have evolved. The brains behind the Li Auto L9 Livis are remarkably advanced, employing two Mach 100 chips developed by Li Auto using a 5nm process. This combined computing power reaches an impressive 2,560 TOPS, surpassing nearly all vehicles currently on the market.

Li Auto refers to this as the "most powerful intelligent driving brain," and this claim is hard to contest. Such extensive computing capabilities enhance the vehicle's self-driving functionalities. It utilizes a LiDAR sensor mounted on the roof to perceive its surroundings in three dimensions. With the significant processing power at its disposal, the car can make decisions with extraordinary speed, likely outpacing human reaction times. However, the real test lies in how effectively the software navigates real-world traffic conditions.

The suspension system in the L9 Livis is equally noteworthy. It features a groundbreaking 800V active suspension, capable of exerting 10,000 Newtons of force on each wheel. With independent wheel movement, the vehicle eliminates the need for traditional anti-roll bars, ensuring a stable ride through corners while maintaining comfort over uneven surfaces.

To enhance maneuverability in urban environments, Li Auto has incorporated four-wheel steering, which allows the rear wheels to turn slightly, reducing the turning radius. Additionally, the vehicle utilizes "steer-by-wire" and "brake-by-wire" technologies, relying on electrical signals rather than mechanical linkages.

The new L9 Livis has increased in size compared to earlier versions, measuring over 17.4 feet in length—an expansion from the previous 17.13 feet. It maintains a width of 7 feet and a height of 5.9 feet. While its exterior closely resembles the rest of the Li Auto lineup, notable updates include flush door handles and a redesigned light strip along the rear.

Its appearance is further enhanced by a new paint finish, available in two-tone color options reminiscent of luxury vehicles such as the Maybach. The model boasts striking 22-inch rims and wide tires, contributing to a robust and fashionable aesthetic. Inside, it continues to offer a spacious six-seat configuration designed for families who desire a "living room on wheels."

With all this advanced technology comes a higher price point. The Li Auto L9 Livis is expected to retail for RMB 559,800 in China (approximately £58,731). This represents an increase of around £10,500 over the former top-tier model, positioning the L9 Livis in direct competition with powerful electric vehicles from other luxury manufacturers.

Additional details are still forthcoming. Rumors suggest it may feature a 73 kWh battery and rapid charging capabilities; however, the company has yet to confirm specifics regarding its driving range or top speed for this model. Previous versions of the L9 boasted a range exceeding 870 miles on a full tank and electric charge, creating high expectations for the Livis. Given the decline in their sales figures over the past year, Li Auto is keen to ensure the success of this new offering.
