Introducing the 2027 Volvo EX60: An Electric SUV with 810 km Range and Off-Road Capability

Source: Date:

The electric mid-size SUV segment is highly competitive, with numerous manufacturers vying for consumer attention. After a brief hiatus, Volvo has re-entered this market with the 2027 EX60, a vehicle that aims not only to compete but to lead. With an EPA-rated range of 400 miles (up to 503 miles WLTP), rapid charging capabilities, and an unexpected off-road variant, this model is designed for both dedicated Volvo enthusiasts and those considering a switch from Tesla.

The standout figure is the range: 400 miles for the EX60 P12 AWD Electric variant. The European WLTP estimate reaches up to 503 miles on a single charge, a range previously reserved for luxury sedans or massive electric trucks. With this launch, Volvo is offering a significant challenge to the industry's status quo in the mid-size family SUV category.

This remarkable efficiency stems from Volvo's new SPA3 platform and innovative "HuginCore" computing system, which integrates battery cells directly into the car's structure to reduce weight. However, range is only one aspect of the EX60's appeal; its charging speed is equally impressive. Capable of charging at up to 400 kW, the vehicle can achieve approximately 173 miles of range in just 10 minutes. Additionally, it will be the first Volvo to feature a native NACS charging port, facilitating direct access to over 25,000 Tesla Superchargers without the need for an adapter.

The EX60 is offered in three powertrain configurations, catering to a variety of driver preferences, from efficiency-minded commuters to speed enthusiasts. The entry-level P6 Electric variant features a rear-wheel drive single motor, producing 369 horsepower (275 kW) and 354 lb-ft of torque, accelerating from 0 to 62 mph in 5.9 seconds. It is equipped with an 83 kWh battery (80 kWh usable), providing an EPA estimated range of around 310 miles (WLTP 385 miles).

The P10 AWD Electric variant adds a front motor, boosting power to 503 horsepower (375 kW) and torque to 523 lb-ft. This version sprints to 62 mph in a sports-car-inspiring 4.6 seconds, thanks to a larger 95 kWh battery (91 kWh usable) that offers an estimated range of approximately 320 miles (WLTP 410 miles).

The flagship P12 AWD Electric model delivers an impressive 671 horsepower (500 kW) and 582 lb-ft of torque, reaching 62 mph in a mere 3.9 seconds—outpacing many performance-focused cars. It features the most substantial battery at 117 kWh (112 kWh usable), achieving the notable 400-mile EPA-rated range (WLTP 503 miles).

Inside, the EX60 exemplifies Scandinavian minimalism, with a tech-savvy cabin that enhances the driving experience. This model introduces "Gemini," Google's advanced AI assistant, allowing for natural interactions rather than relying on rigid voice commands. Supported by NVIDIA and Qualcomm technologies, the infotainment system is designed to be responsive and user-friendly.

Music lovers will appreciate the return of Bowers & Wilkins, boasting a premium 28-speaker sound system. For the first time, speakers are integrated into the headrests of all four main seats, creating personalized audio zones for each passenger. The system comes with pre-installed Apple Music and supports Dolby Atmos for an immersive listening experience that rivals home theaters.

Thanks to the flat floor provided by the electric platform, the EX60 maximizes interior space, featuring a wheelbase of 297 cm for ample legroom. The trunk can hold 22.4 ft³ of luggage with the seats up, expanding to a substantial 58.2 ft³ when folded. Additionally, there's a "frunk" (front trunk) offering another 2.05 ft³ to 3 ft³ of storage, ideal for cables or outdoor gear.

Maintaining Volvo's strict safety standards, the EX60 features a safety cage reinforced with boron steel to safeguard both the battery and occupants. The vehicle comes equipped with numerous sensors, including LiDAR, which continuously scans the environment to construct a detailed 3D representation of its surroundings. This technology empowers the vehicle to navigate complex driving situations and lays the groundwork for future autonomous driving functionalities.

Volvo has also introduced a new "multi-adaptive" safety belt in the front row that adjusts its tension and resistance based on the occupant's size and the severity of a potential collision.

Additionally, the EX60 Cross Country variant has been unveiled, highlighting Volvo's legacy of robust vehicles suited for diverse terrains. This model sits 0.79 inches higher than the standard EX60 and offers enhanced clearance for navigating rocky or snowy landscapes. Its adjustable air suspension can raise the vehicle further when necessary or lower it on highways to improve aerodynamics and efficiency.

Distinctive features include exclusive color options, brushed stainless steel skid plates, rugged wheel arches, and specially designed wheels, ensuring it can match its adventurous spirit with both the P10 and P12 AWD powertrains.

The Volvo EX60 is currently available for order in European markets, while U.S. customers can expect to see order books open in late spring of 2026. Production is set to begin this spring at Volvo's facility in Sweden, with deliveries for the P6 and P10 models starting in the summer. The P12 variant will follow soon after.

Volvo asserts that the EX60 effectively removes hurdles preventing consumers from transitioning to electric vehicles, showcasing range, charging speed, and practicality. They are also introducing a new Care purchase option, essentially an all-inclusive lease for up to three years. The remaining question remains: how affordable will it truly be?

In Sweden, the base model EX60 starts at just over $75,600, with an additional $4,500 for the dual-motor setup. The high-performance P12 variant adds over $13,100. For the Ultra trim, expect to pay approximately $97,800 before including optional add-ons. The lease costs range from $996 to $1,350, depending on the version. As of now, the pricing details for the Cross Country model remain unconfirmed.
