Time is running out for those eligible to claim their share of YouTube’s $30 million class-action settlement! Following six years of legal battles, the popular video platform, owned by Google, has agreed to this payout due to allegations that it improperly collected personal data from children. If you or someone you know might qualify for compensation, read on to find out how to file your claim before the deadline runs out!
A Summary of the Settlement
The settlement comes after a ruling from the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, where the lawsuit was filed by parents of children under 13. The case centered on claims that YouTube collected data from kids watching content meant for their audience, including nursery rhymes and cartoons, and used this information for advertising purposes, all without parental consent.

The lawsuit claimed that the data collected included serial numbers of devices, geolocation information, and IP addresses. Although Google has agreed to settle, the company continues to deny any wrongdoing. Any minor who watched child-directed content on YouTube and was under 13 years old between July 1, 2013, and April 1, 2020, may be eligible for compensation. This means that individuals currently aged 6 to 25 could potentially receive a portion of this settlement.
How to File a Claim
Steven Bloch, one of the attorneys involved with the case, estimates that there could be around one million valid claims. After deducting legal fees and expenses, eligible claimants could receive approximately $20 to $30 each.
