The All-New Jeep Compass 4xe: A Revolutionary Electric Crossover Inspired by the Arctic

As the automotive industry accelerates towards electrification, Jeep has ventured to the icy terrains of Arjeplog, Sweden, to unveil its new fully electric Jeep Compass 4xe. Unlike its predecessors, the 2024 Compass 4xe is engineered to reclaim Jeep's adventurous spirit by embracing an all-electric drivetrain, offering a profound departure from traditional hybrids. Designed and tested in an unforgiving environment, this compact crossover not only focuses on eco-friendliness but also aims to deliver the thrill associated with the iconic Jeep brand.

The original Jeep Compass, introduced in 2006, struggled to uphold Jeep's legendary off-road reputation, being a front-wheel-drive vehicle with less-than-stellar performance. Transitioning to the new Compass 4xe, Jeep eliminates the constraints of earlier hybrid models that relied on a gas engine paired with an electric motor. Instead, the new model is built on the advanced Stellantis STLA Medium architecture, featuring a fully electric setup that guarantees thrilling performance off-road as well as on-road efficiency.

The Jeep Compass 4xe is powered by an efficient dual-motor layout. The front electric motor generates 157 kW and 345 Nm of torque, while the rear motor produces 132 kW and 232 Nm, translating to a combined output of 375 horsepower. This robust powertrain allows the Compass to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in a swift 4.9 seconds, showcasing a remarkable level of responsiveness that exceeds expectations for a compact SUV. More than just rapid acceleration, the Compass 4xe maintains power to all four wheels, granting drivers confidence regardless of conditions.

A standout feature of the Compass 4xe is its sophisticated electronic control systems that monitor grip in real-time, allowing for precise handling even in slippery conditions. With the Selec-Terrain system set to Sport mode, the vehicle enables a controlled drift by adjusting power delivery and stability control, ensuring drivers can enjoy the thrill without feeling restrained by traditional electronic nannies.

The Compass 4xe comes equipped with a substantial 96.1 kWh battery pack offering an estimated range of up to 606 km in ideal conditions. However, typical winter driving conditions may see real-world range reduced to around 400 km. When it's time to recharge, the vehicle's 160 kW DC fast charging capability allows efficient refueling, completing a significant charge in about 30 minutes.

In terms of dimensions, the Compass 4xe measures 4,587 mm long, 1,936 mm wide, and stands at 1,689 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,795 mm. This robust stance and angular design set it apart from competitors like the Tesla Model Y and Volkswagen ID.4 GTX, boasting a cargo space of 515 liters, making it practical for adventurous excursions.

Beyond performance, the new Compass 4xe harbors an updated aesthetic. The grille takes on a closed-off design, complemented by innovative LED headlights. Inside, a modern cockpit showcases a 16-inch Uconnect touchscreen and an intuitive digital instrument cluster that enhances user experience without overwhelming drivers with complicated menus.

The pricing for the top-of-the-line Compass 4xe starts at €56,700, placing it within competitive territory alongside models such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 AWD and Tesla Model Y Long Range. This pricing strategy reflects Jeep's ambitious effort to enter the electric vehicle market with a robust offering that blends renowned off-road capabilities with cutting-edge technology.
