In a significant move towards streamlining its mobile application offerings, Microsoft has announced the retirement of Office Lens, also known as Microsoft Lens. This decision marks the end of a long-standing app that has assisted users in capturing and managing documents on their mobile devices. As Microsoft redirects its focus toward integrated solutions, users will need to transition to new tools available within OneDrive.
Office Lens Set for Retirement
The timeline for the app's discontinuation is straightforward: support for Office Lens will officially conclude on February 9, with full functionality ceasing after March 9. Although users will be unable to create new scans post-retirement date, any existing scans will still be available for access if the app remains installed on their devices.
Transitioning to OneDrive
Microsoft encourages users to utilize OneDrive as the primary alternative to Office Lens. The scanning capabilities previously found in Lens have been integrated into OneDrive, allowing users to capture documents, receipts, and whiteboards, as well as edit and crop these items digitally. Additionally, images can be converted into Word or PDF files. However, it’s worth noting that OneDrive does not permit local file storage directly on devices, which could pose a drawback for some users.
