Apple's gradual transition to OLED across its tablet lineup appears to be gaining momentum. While the iPad Pro and iPad mini have already made the jump to OLED technology, the iPad Air remains the notable holdout, still relying on LCD panels in both its 11-inch and 13-inch configurations. That could soon change, however, as fresh reports from Korean industry insiders suggest the OLED-equipped iPad Air is on track for a debut in the first half of 2027 — a timeline that aligns with previous leaks on the matter.
According to these sources, Apple has ambitious shipment targets for its OLED iPad family in 2027. The iPad Pro is expected to account for roughly 3 to 4 million units, while the iPad mini and iPad Air are each projected to move between 4 and 5 million units. When it comes to panel suppliers, Samsung Display is reportedly positioned to handle all of the iPad mini orders and the lion's share of the iPad Air panels, sharing that workload with Chinese display maker BOE. Meanwhile, production of iPad Pro panels will reportedly remain split between LG Display and Samsung Display, with LG taking the lead role. BOE is said to be vying for one of the two iPad Air sizes, though its chances of securing the deal are still uncertain.
Apple also appears intent on preserving a clear technological divide between its premium and mid-range tablets. The iPad Pro will continue to feature tandem OLED technology paired with LTPO backplanes, delivering superior brightness and efficiency. In contrast, the iPad mini and iPad Air will reportedly adopt a more cost-effective single-stack OLED design with LTPS backplanes — a strategy that had been rumored previously and would help Apple keep prices in check on its more affordable models.
