iPhone Duo ecosystem hits major milestone as Apple confirms 100,000+ optimized apps

It's been roughly two weeks since the iPhone Duo first arrived on store shelves, and Apple is already touting a major software milestone. According to the company, the App Store now hosts more than 100,000 applications purpose-built for its foldable handset, and that figure continues to grow by thousands every single day.

Susan Prescott, who leads Worldwide Developer Relations at Apple, credits the developer community for moving at a remarkable pace. Among the big names already on board are Microsoft's productivity suite - Excel, OneNote, PowerPoint, and Word - as well as Etsy, Goodnotes, Halide Mark III, NBA, NHL, Zoom, Amazon Prime Video, Fantastical, Flighty, Instagram, MLB, Netflix, SmartGym, WhatsApp, and YouTube. To help users spot them, optimized titles carry a special Made for iPhone Duo badge right on their App Store listings.

Part of that momentum comes from Apple's own outreach efforts. The company says it hosted more than 50 hands-on workshops across 19 cities in the last month alone, drawing upwards of 2,000 developers. On the technical side, apps built with standard SwiftUI and UIKit elements can scale to both screens automatically, while fresh APIs give creators control over bespoke layouts and hinge-based postures. Legacy apps will still launch on the device, though they may not take full advantage of the larger inner panel.

That said, there's still plenty of ground to cover. With millions of titles in the App Store, many popular apps remain unoptimized - Google Maps only recently joined the list. Apple, however, is confident the wave of updates will only accelerate from this point forward.
