Global smartphone shipments dropped sharply in the third quarter of 2026, according to new data from research firm Omdia. The market recorded a 20 percent year-on-year decline, with manufacturers shipping 254.7 million units during the quarter.
The report identified rising smartphone prices as a key driver behind the downturn, marking the lowest Q3 shipment level since 2013 and signaling continued weakness in consumer demand.
Samsung remained the world's leading smartphone vendor, shipping 57.8 million units in the quarter, though that figure was down 5 percent from the same period last year. Apple trailed slightly behind with 56.5 million iPhones shipped, maintaining the same shipment level as Q3 2025.
Xiaomi ranked third with 30.7 million units shipped, representing a 29 percent year-on-year decline. Oppo placed fourth with 23.4 million units, down 39 percent, while vivo finished the top five with 19.3 million units, a 33 percent decrease from the prior year.
Omdia said vendors are responding to higher component costs and supply constraints by concentrating on more profitable markets and flagship products. Manufacturers are also adjusting RAM and storage configurations and trimming product lineups to control costs and protect margins.
Looking ahead, Omdia expects global smartphone shipments to decline by another 12 percent during 2026, with the market likely to continue shrinking in 2027, though at a slower rate.
