After moving away from under-display selfie cameras on its book-style foldables, Samsung is now rumored to be bringing the technology back for the Galaxy Z Fold9. The shift would put the next Fold in direct competition with Apple’s iPhone Duo, which also uses an under-display camera on its inner display.
Samsung first introduced an under-display camera on the Galaxy Z Fold3 in 2021 and kept it through the Galaxy Z Fold6. Last year’s Galaxy Z Fold7 switched to a conventional punch-hole cutout, and both the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra and the standard Galaxy Z Fold8 continued with that design.
According to a tipster on X, Samsung is now planning a device with an under-display camera, “major internal changes,” and only minimal changes to overall thickness and design. The same source previously claimed the Galaxy Z Fold9 is already in development with a target thickness of 3.9mm unfolded and 7.9mm folded.

The tipster also said Samsung is positioning the Fold9 as a direct rival to the iPhone Duo. Apple’s first foldable reportedly opted for a 4MP under-display selfie camera on its inner screen, so Samsung reviving the feature would not be surprising.
Still, this is an unconfirmed rumor from a single source, so it should be treated with caution. The thickness figures also raise questions: the standard Galaxy Z Fold8 measures 4.5mm unfolded and 9.7mm folded, so a 7.9mm folded Fold9 would be a significant reduction for a device described as having only minimal design changes. Those numbers may have been early targets, or they could refer to a different model such as the Fold9 Ultra.
For now, many details remain uncertain, but the rumor suggests Samsung may once again embrace under-display camera technology in its foldable lineup.
