Samsung Reportedly Begins Work on a 17-Inch Foldable Tablet

Source: Date:

Samsung may be preparing its most ambitious foldable device yet, as a fresh tip suggests the company has started work on a tablet with a display that unfolds from 8 inches to 17 inches.

The rumor first appeared in late August, when a tipster on X mentioned that a 17-inch foldable tablet was in development, with multiple test units and versions being worked on. At the time, the company behind the project was not named. Now the same source has added that Samsung has already started.

If the information is accurate, the device would function as an 8-inch tablet when folded and open up to a 17-inch screen when unfolded. Little else is known, as the tipster says they cannot share further details yet.

How Samsung might implement the 8-inch folded mode is still unclear. One possibility is a 17-inch panel that folds outward, leaving half of the screen active when closed. Another is a 17-inch inner display paired with an 8-inch cover screen, similar to a much larger Galaxy Z Fold. The first approach would expose the main display to scratches, while the second would likely drive up the price.

Samsung has been linked to a foldable tablet before. A so-called Galaxy Z Tab was tipped in 2023 but never materialized. Samsung Display has also showcased large foldable panels at trade shows, but it remains uncertain whether Samsung's mobile division sees enough demand for a commercial product.

Still, the foldable market may be shifting. With Apple now expected to enter the category with the iPhone Duo, Samsung could be eager to demonstrate how far it can push the form factor. No launch timing has been mentioned, so a release is unlikely in the near future.
