Introduction: Samsung is once again rumoured to be exploring a giant foldable tablet, and a new tip suggests the company has moved beyond early planning.
In late August, a tipster on X claimed that a 17-inch foldable tablet was in development, with multiple versions and test units being worked on, but did not name the company. Now the same source has added a short update, saying that “Samsung has already started.”
According to the original post, the device would measure around 8 inches when folded and expand to 17 inches when opened. No further details have been shared yet.
It remains unclear how the 8-inch folded state would work. The tablet could use a 17-inch outward-folding screen with only half active when closed, or pair a 17-inch inner display with an 8-inch cover screen, similar to a much larger Galaxy Z Fold. The first approach would leave the main display exposed, while the second would likely push the price even higher.
Samsung has been linked to a foldable tablet before — a so-called Galaxy Z Tab was tipped in 2023 but never materialised. Samsung Display is certainly capable of producing large foldable panels and has shown off prototypes at trade shows, but whether Samsung’s mobile division sees enough demand for such a device is another matter.
The foldable market has shifted now that Apple has reportedly entered with the iPhone Duo, so Samsung may be keen to demonstrate how far it can stretch the form factor. There is no word on launch timing, so the device may not arrive anytime soon.
