Apple Debuts New MacBook Pro Models with PROLED XDR OLED Touchscreen and Dynamic Island

Apple has officially unveiled a new line of MacBook Pro models that will be sold alongside the current lineup. The new laptops introduce the long-rumored OLED displays and bring touchscreen functionality to the Mac for the first time.

The headline upgrade is the display, which Apple calls PROLED XDR. This panel uses the same Tandem OLED technology found in the iPad Pro, stacking two OLED layers to boost light output. The MacBook Pro screens can reach up to 2,000 nits of peak brightness and 1,000 nits of sustained brightness. They support variable refresh rates from 10Hz to 120Hz and cover both P3 and Adobe RGB color spaces.

The display also marks another first: touchscreen input on a Mac. Apple is positioning touch as an additional way to interact with apps and content rather than a complete reinvention of macOS, which has not been significantly redesigned for touch. Notably, there is no support for the Apple Pencil.

Another display change is the replacement of the notch with the Dynamic Island. Face ID is still absent, however, so Touch ID remains the only secure authentication method on the MacBook Pro.

Apple has also refined the physical design of these new models compared to the standard MacBook Pro range. They are slightly smaller in every dimension by a few millimeters and noticeably lighter by about 200–300 grams depending on the model. The internal thermal system has been reworked to direct warm air away from the display.

One detail many buyers will likely enjoy is the return of the glowing Apple logo on the back of the lid, a design cue from older MacBooks that helps these new models stand out from the standard range.

The speaker system has also been upgraded. The new models retain a six-speaker setup but gain new woofers with 50 percent deeper bass and new tweeters. The design has been adjusted so the speakers still sound good even when the lid is closed.

Aside from these changes, the new MacBook Pro models are similar to the existing range. They offer the same M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, the same memory and storage options, the same connectivity features, and the same battery life. The real difference comes down to choosing between the LCD or the OLED with touch.

The PROLED XDR range starts at $2,899 for the 14-inch model with M5 Pro and $3,399 for the 16-inch model with M5 Pro. For M5 Max, prices are $4,499 and $4,799, respectively. They are available for pre-order today and will go on sale November 6.
