BMW Advances Towards Series Production of the iX5 Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle

BMW is making significant strides in the development of its iX5 Hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, marking a notable step towards diversifying its powertrain offerings. With the backing of substantial funding from the German Federal Ministry of Transport and the state of Bavaria, BMW is on the path to integrating hydrogen technology into its vehicle lineup, signaling a commitment to sustainable driving solutions.

The BMW iX5 will soon feature a hydrogen fuel cell variant, complementing its lineup that includes battery-electric, plug-in hybrid, petrol, and diesel models. This innovative iX5 Hydrogen is being developed as part of the HyPowerDrive project, with €191 million in funding from the German Federal Ministry of Transport and €82 million from the state of Bavaria.

As BMW’s inaugural hydrogen-powered production vehicle, the iX5 Hydrogen is currently undergoing rigorous testing. The development focuses on the seamless integration of its various drive system components—including the fuel cell system, high-voltage battery, electric motor, and hydrogen tanks—to enhance overall system performance and efficiency.

According to the company’s official press release, development teams are "validating the functionality of all components within the integrated vehicle system and optimizing the complex control of the systems, even under high loads." The goal is to ensure that the full potential of the drivetrain is accessible at all times while maintaining BMW's signature driving dynamics in this fuel cell electric vehicle.

The aim is to achieve performance metrics akin to the other iX5 versions, with an acceleration target of 0 to 100 km/h in under five seconds and an impressive range of 750 km based on the WLTP cycle. It is expected that refueling will take less than five minutes.

Concurrently, BMW is advancing to the next phase of prototype assembly for the fuel cell system at its Hydrogen Competence Center in Munich. This phase is focused on finalizing and validating testing methodologies. The series production of the fuel cell systems is set to occur at the BMW Group Plant in Steyr, Austria, where initial test benches and manufacturing equipment are already in place, alongside a staged employee training program.
