Since their launch, pre-orders and actual sales figures indicate a strong consumer preference for the newer models, a sign that Samsung has successfully tapped into a growing market for foldable technology.
According to Samsung, pre-orders for the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Z Flip8 in August were already up by 20% compared to the previous year's pre-orders for the Galaxy Z Fold7 series. Sales have now escalated further, with combined sales figures of the Z Fold8 and Z Fold8 Ultra showing a 50% increase over last year's Z Fold7. It’s important to note that this statistic excludes Z Flip sales, but it still paints a clear picture of a burgeoning market for foldables.
Another telling indication of the Z Fold8's success can be seen in the upgrade trends: former Galaxy Z Flip owners have transitioned to the Z Fold8 at a rate three times higher compared to the previous year’s shift to the Z Fold7.
Crossing the Atlantic, the Z Fold8 series is also faring well in the U.S., boasting a 30% increase in sales over the Z Fold7. Notably, the Z Fold8 and Z Fold8 Ultra make up 80% of current Galaxy Z series purchases in the U.S., while the Z Flip8 accounts for the remaining 20%.
Notably, the Z Flip models have emerged as an attractive entry point for many consumers; 20% of European Z Flip8 purchasers switched from other brands, as did 30% in the U.S. These figures suggest that the Z Flip8 is making foldable devices accessible to a broader audience.
Moreover, Samsung's strategy seems to be successfully enticing former iPhone users, with a reported 60% increase in iPhone owners opting to buy the Galaxy Z8 series compared to the Z7 lineup from the previous year.
