Apple has once again raised the bar for true wireless earbuds with the introduction of the AirPods 5. This latest iteration not only boasts significant upgrades in sound quality and noise cancellation technology but also offers these features at a surprisingly lower price point. As Apple continues to innovate in the audio space, users can expect an impressive listening experience, whether they're at home or on the go.
The AirPods 5 come in two variants: one featuring a standard USB-C case, and another equipped with a wireless charging case that includes stem touch controls. Notably, both models incorporate Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), which Apple claims to be the best available in an open-ear design.
In terms of performance, the ANC technology on the AirPods 5 is reported to reduce up to 50% more external noise compared to the previous generation. Transparency mode has also been enhanced, allowing for a more natural reproduction of voices and ambient sounds.
The new earbuds feature an advanced multiport acoustic architecture and a next-gen Adaptive EQ, delivering richer and more nuanced audio quality. Additionally, the design improvement caters to a wider range of ear shapes and enhances personalized spatial audio experiences.
Users can enjoy hands-free access to Siri AI when connected with an Apple Intelligence-ready iPhone, enabling them to request personalized content in messages, emails, and photos for use in compatible apps. Interactive gestures include head nods for "yes" and head shakes for "no," while the wireless charging model introduces swipe controls on the stem for volume adjustments—an exciting first for non-Pro AirPods.
Battery life has also seen improvement; AirPods 5 offer up to 5 hours of listening time with ANC enabled—an hour more than the previous model. The wireless charging variant provides a total battery life of up to 22 hours. Furthermore, the earbuds come with an IP57 rating for durability, which includes resistance to temporary immersion, moving beyond mere splash resistance.
The AirPods 5 are priced at $129/€149 for the standard model and $149/€169 for the version with a wireless charging case and touch controls. Pre-orders are currently available, and they will be released on September 18.
