After receiving our new BMW iX3 50 xDrive, we couldn't resist putting its promised range capabilities to the test. Our journey began at the dealership, leading us on a scenic trip to the coast, which covered nearly 400 km. Following a delightful stay by the seaside, we set off again from a more distant point, exceeding the 400 km mark on our return journey.
Beginning our trip at a higher altitude compared to the coastal destination, we anticipated better efficiency on the way out and a slight decline in performance as we ascended back inland.
The trip computer indicated that our first leg of the journey was marginally shorter yet traveled at a slightly higher average speed. Although we set the cruise control for 140 km/h, factors like traffic and road construction reduced our average speed to 120 km/h. At the conclusion of this segment, the iX3 50 xDrive demonstrated an ability to cover 535 km at highway speeds with air conditioning active, all while temperatures outside soared to 29°C. This stellar performance highlights the exceptional efficiency of the iX3.
During our return journey, we encountered heavier traffic which slightly reduced our average speed. Despite these challenges, the energy consumption figures saw only a minor uptick due to the elevation gain. Nevertheless, at an average speed of 113 km/h, our calculations indicated that a fully charged battery would still offer around 524 km of range—an outstanding result indeed.
For those looking to mimic their driving scenarios, we recommend utilizing our custom widget that simulates various conditions. Interestingly, our findings with the larger 21” wheels reflected a slight decrease in performance, aligning with expectations. This data not only showcases the reliability of our widget but also reiterates the iX3's resilient performance across different situations.
Our choice of a white interior paired with a Brooklyn Grey exterior proved wise in combating the summer heat. The cabin cooled down rapidly, and the convenience of controlling the AC through an app helped offset the absence of ventilated seats for quick trips.
