Apple is gearing up to unveil iOS 27 shortly after the highly anticipated iPhone event next week. Among the exciting new features, users can look forward to a groundbreaking capability that allows them to use the same phone number across two different iPhones.
The new functionality, dubbed iPhone Handoff, was briefly highlighted during Apple's WWDC announcements in June. Recent insights shared by a user on the MacRumors forum shed light on how exactly this innovative feature will work.
To test the capabilities of iPhone Handoff, the user simulated two iPhones using the Device Hub in Xcode 27. They discovered that the feature will necessitate one iPhone to be set as the main device, with the second iPhone acting as a companion device.
The main eSIM will be retained on the primary iPhone, while a companion eSIM will be established on the secondary device. This functionality allows users to seamlessly switch between their two iPhones while keeping the same phone number active.
As highlighted by the user, the phone number will automatically transition between both devices based on which iPhone is currently unlocked and being utilized. Additionally, users will receive notifications in the Dynamic Island whenever the phone number switches between devices.
Cellular settings, however, will remain confined to the primary iPhone, and this feature will depend on carrier support. Initial reports suggest that T-Mobile in the United States and Deutsche Telekom in Germany may be among the first carriers to adopt iPhone Handoff.
