The Poco brand has made headlines with its announcement of the chipsets for the highly anticipated Poco F9 Pro and F9 Ultra models. Building upon the legacy of its predecessors, the latest models promise enhanced performance and capabilities. Here’s everything you need to know about their specifications and what they bring to the user experience.
Recently, the Poco F9 Ultra ran Geekbench 7 featuring the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, the same top-of-the-line chipset that powered the F8 Ultra last year. Now, thanks to official confirmation from Poco, we know that the new Ultra will indeed utilize the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip.
The Poco F9 series will utilize Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and 8 Elite Gen 5 V-series chipsets.
On the other hand, the Poco F9 Pro will incorporate the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V-series chipset. Although Qualcomm's naming conventions can be confusing, it's important to note that the V-series has identical CPU cores as the regular Elite Gen 5. The distinguishing feature lies in its GPU, which is 33% smaller, equipped with just 8 compute units compared to the full 12. Moreover, the GPU’s on-chip memory is also lower at 12MB versus 18MB in the standard variant.
For context, the previously released Poco F8 Pro was powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, which was considered the flagship chip for 2024 (if Qualcomm had numbered consistently, this would be classified as “Gen 4”). Hence, there was speculation that the new Pro model might be equipped with the non-Elite Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. However, the decision made to incorporate the V-series is a pleasant surprise.
The V-series not only boasts a faster CPU than its non-Elite counterpart but also ensures that the GPUs are relatively equal in performance. Therefore, the Poco F9 Pro users can expect a significant upgrade, while the Poco F9 Ultra maintains its predecessor's performance.
