Recently, VESA introduced a new high-level certification for displays called DisplayHDR True Black 1400, which raises the brightness requirement by 40% compared to the previous top standard, reaching up to 1,400 nits. Samsung has announced that its new OLED display has earned this certification and is now supplying panels to laptop manufacturers.
This certification mandates that black pixels must maintain a brightness level of 0.0005 nits or lower, while white pixels can reach 1,400 nits at a 10% On Pixel Ratio (meaning 10% of screen pixels display white while the rest remain black).
Samsung achieved this through a tandem design, which involves stacking two OLED panels on top of each other. This configuration not only allows for higher peak brightness but also enhances overall performance. The two panels share the workload, leading to regular brightness levels achieved with less strain on the panels. According to Samsung, under typical laptop operating conditions, the new tandem OLED panel has more than double the lifespan of a single-stack OLED panel.
The company has also employed advanced organic emissive materials to further boost the performance and longevity of the panels, building on the advantages of the tandem design.
Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i Aura Edition (11th gen)The new panel is already featured in the 11th generation of the Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i Aura Edition. This model includes a 16-inch touchscreen with a 3.2K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. Branded as PureSight Pro Tandem OLED by Lenovo, it boasts VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1400 certification and can reach peak brightness of 1,600 nits. The display also offers highly accurate colors, achieving 100% coverage of sRGB and DCI-P3, along with 99% coverage of AdobeRGB.
The laptop can be configured with Intel Core Ultra 7 or 9 processors (356H or 386H) and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5050 or 5060 laptop GPU, both featuring 8GB of VRAM. It includes 32GB of LPDDR5X (7,467MT/s, soldered) system memory and offers either a 512GB or 1TB PCIe Gen 4 SSD (TLC). Additionally, laptops from other manufacturers, including Asus, Dell, and MSI, are expected to feature Samsung’s new tandem OLED display in the latter half of this year. Samsung will also showcase the new panel at K-Display 2026, set to take place in Seoul from July 22 to 24.
