Disney has long been associated with premium content and subscriptions, especially since the launch of Disney+ in November 2019. However, recent discussions within the company suggest a significant shift could be on the horizon. Rumors indicate that Disney is considering introducing a free, ad-supported version of Disney+ that would allow users to enjoy a selection of movies and TV shows without any monthly fees. This move aims to expand the platform's audience and respond to changing consumer behavior.

Insider Reports on Free Tier Discussions

According to Business Insider, Disney's Chief Product and Technology Officer, Adam Smith, brought up the potential for a free service tier during a recent staff meeting. This conversation highlights Disney's strategy to increase viewer numbers in response to the ongoing decline in subscription retention due to escalating prices in the streaming market.
While nothing has been finalized, the proposed offering would likely mirror other free streaming services like Pluto TV and Tubi, which generate revenue through advertisements.

Potential Limitations of the Free Tier

Should Disney pursue this ad-supported free tier, not all of the platform's favored content would be available without payment. Popular franchises like Star Wars and Marvel are expected to remain exclusive to paying subscribers, ensuring that the most sought-after titles continue to drive revenue.
As consumers continue to reevaluate their monthly streaming subscriptions, the introduction of this free tier could align perfectly with current market conditions. Disney+ currently offers bundled packages that range from $12.99 to $44.99 per month, catering to diverse consumer preferences and viewing habits.
Recent changes to T-Mobile's offerings have also impacted viewer costs, making it necessary for some subscribers to pay for Disney+ standalone services instead of taking advantage of bundled discounts.

Growth and Subscriber Trends

Despite these challenges, Disney+ showcased robust growth, adding 7 million core subscribers in fiscal 2025, for a global total of 131.6 million. The US and Canada account for a substantial portion (54 to 56 million) of these numbers. Notably, 30% of subscribers have opted for the ad-supported Basic tier, suggesting that a free version could further bolster user acquisition.

Profitability Through Advertising

Disney can leverage advertising to drive profits even with a free tier, similar to Spotify's successful model. Currently, Spotify boasts 761 million total subscribers, with approximately 483 million on the free ad-supported plan. By offering advertisers access to a vast audience, Disney can ensure that even free users generate significant revenue.
