A relatively unknown Chinese company, StepFun, has announced plans to manufacture what it claims is the world’s first "AI agentic phone." This announcement comes ahead of any promotional efforts from OpenAI regarding its rumored smartphone.
Founded in 2023 by former Microsoft employees in Shanghai, StepFun is teasing its new device, the StepX Neo. While the company has previously focused on on-device AI solutions for manufacturers like Oppo and Geely, this marks its foray into smartphone production.
The name choice, StepX, raises questions, as it appears to be reminiscent of SpaceX, yet it may inadvertently overlap with the existing StepX fitness platform.
The StepX Neo will operate on Step AOS and feature a "personal intelligent agent" named Step Amoo. Amoo functions similarly to other AI chatbots, allowing users to engage in natural language conversations. The operating system claims to provide a "native runtime environment" for intelligent agents, addressing three primary challenges: memory, decision-making, and execution. Memory retrieval is reportedly as swift as 15 milliseconds, with strong capabilities for offline autonomous execution as well.
While some AI operations occur on-device, others leverage cloud resources for more complex tasks, all while ensuring personal data remains secure within the phone.
StepFun has developed an on-device large language model (LLM) called Step Edge, claiming it performs at the top of its class in 29 leading benchmarks. However, specific comparisons or benchmark details have not yet been disclosed.
It remains uncertain whether Step AOS represents a genuine innovation or if it is primarily a customized version of Android. StepFun describes it as a blend of Android, Linux, and RTOS, but further clarity is lacking.
The device also features a dot matrix LED display on its back, reminiscent of designs seen in Nothing phones. So far, no detailed specifications have been revealed.
Nonetheless, StepFun has unveiled its first batch of partners, which includes various Chinese apps and services such as Meituan, Alipay, Amap, Baidu, Didi, Ctrip, and others. At present, the announcement seems to rely more on buzzwords than substantial details.
While it remains to be seen whether this will evolve into a tangible product, the validation of the concept of an "agentic phone" is still up in the air. For now, it appears to be a smaller Chinese AI startup attempting to capture attention among industry giants and claim a pioneering role in smartphone launches.
