Waze Enhances Functionality with Gemini AI and New Modes

Today, Google unveiled exciting new features for Waze, available on both Android and iOS. Users familiar with Gemini will be pleased to know it’s being integrated further.

Currently, Gemini facilitates "conversational reporting" in Waze, allowing users to report traffic incidents using natural speech. The update will expand this capability by enabling users to suggest map updates, such as road closures or incorrect addresses, simply by saying, "the road is closed here." Gemini will relay these details to local map editors for verification and updates.

Furthermore, Gemini will assist in finding destinations. Users can now tap the voice search icon to inquire about nearby coffee shops, available parking spaces, or gas stations with the best prices. This feature is gradually being rolled out to beta testers worldwide on Android and iOS.

In addition, Waze is introducing a motorcycle mode in several countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, and the Philippines for both Android and iOS users, with plans to expand. This function utilizes AI to include shortcuts and restrictions for two-wheelers, highlighting hazards that may be particularly challenging for riders, such as potholes, speed bumps, raised crosswalks, shoulder endings, and narrow bridges.

Waze's navigation is also becoming more tailored to user behavior, suggesting routes based on previous trips. Users can opt-out of this feature in the app settings if they prefer.

Additionally, a new "less chatty" mode is being introduced, which reduces the number of voice prompts and keeps them concise, allowing users to concentrate on their music or podcasts. Critical reminders about hazards, turns, and lane changes will still be provided but at a reduced frequency.
