ChatGPT Returns to WhatsApp in Europe Following European Commission's Mandate

Source: Date:

Last month, the European Commission (EC) mandated that Meta allow third-party AI chatbots to operate freely on WhatsApp within the European Economic Area (EEA). This directive came in response to Meta's previous ban on such chatbots in November and its later decision in March to permit them but only at a cost.

As a result of the EC's intervention, ChatGPT is now accessible on WhatsApp throughout the EEA. Users can communicate with it at the number 1-800-CHATGPT without the need to download the ChatGPT application.

Similar to using the ChatGPT app, users can ask questions, upload images, send voice messages, and generate images, all within the WhatsApp platform.

The EC's inquiry regarding this situation is ongoing, but Meta is required to ensure free access to third-party AI chatbots in WhatsApp until a final decision is reached by the Commission.
