Android 17, however, drastically reduces the number of attempts, allowing only six guesses in the first minute and just 19 total attempts over five years. With the updated system, after 20 incorrect attempts, the phone locks down, making it exceedingly difficult for even the most determined thief to break in. While it seems improbable to have only 20 attempts for the lifetime of the phone, the system resets the guess count after a successful entry, ensuring you won’t be left locked out permanently.

Why These Changes Were Necessary

The rationale behind the modification lies in the statistics. Under the previous system, attackers could easily guess commonly used passcodes, especially if they had personal information about the victim. By drastically reducing the number of guessing opportunities, Google is effectively lowering the chances for former associates or opportunistic enemies to compromise your device's security.

Preventing Common Input Errors with Duplicate Guess Detection

In addition to tightening security, Android 17 introduces a duplicate guess detection feature. This function ensures that repeated incorrect attempts do not decrease your total available chances, which is particularly useful when users accidentally input the same wrong PIN multiple times. Given the reduced limit of 20 incorrect entries, preserving your attempts becomes essential.

The Importance of Choosing a Stronger PIN Format
