SpaceX's Unlikely Mobile Service Partner: Charter Communications

Source: Date:

In a surprising turn of events, SpaceX is reportedly considering a partnership with Charter Communications for its upcoming mobile service rather than the previously speculated acquisition of T-Mobile. This collaboration could provide SpaceX a practical route to establish a direct-to-consumer mobile phone offering by leveraging Charter's extensive internet infrastructure.

Charter Communications Steps In

A new report from Bloomberg reveals that SpaceX may partner with Charter Communications, the largest home internet provider in the United States. Charter operates a nationwide network of Wi-Fi hotspots, which it uses to manage the majority of the traffic for its Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), Spectrum Mobile. If the partnership materializes, SpaceX will be able to route its mobile traffic through Charter's established ground-based internet infrastructure.

A Streamlined Approach to Mobile Services

While SpaceX has expressed ambitions to build its own mobile network, it currently lacks the spectrum necessary to do so effectively. Following a disappointing performance in the AWS-3 auction, SpaceX's available resources are limited. Major carriers like AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon have also shown reluctance to form an MVNO deal with SpaceX. Thus, collaborating with Charter could represent a more feasible strategy for SpaceX to enter the mobile market directly.

Gwynne Shotwell, President of SpaceX, believes that Starlink Mobile has the potential to outperform Starlink broadband. She indicated that while traditional broadband may not appeal to everyone, there is a significant demand for mobile satellite connectivity among consumers.

"Starlink Mobile will far exceed Starlink broadband in the home. Not everybody is going to need broadband. There are lots of other options as well. But I think the numbers of users of Starlink Mobile will far exceed our Starlink broadband."

Charter's Interest in SpaceX

Recently, Charter merged with Cox Communications, expanding its service reach to over 43.2 million locations. Although the company has previously refrained from selling its infrastructure as a service to others, its newfound willingness to partner with SpaceX indicates a favorable agreement has been proposed. By linking their Wi-Fi networks, Charter could enhance its service offering while granting SpaceX access to a broader user base.

New Opportunities on the Horizon

Joining forces with SpaceX not only provides Charter with an additional revenue stream but also fulfills SpaceX's search for a viable partner. With Charter's vast network capabilities, the collaboration could significantly advance SpaceX's mission of providing widespread connectivity to users across various locations.
