For years, rollable-screen smartphones have remained a long-awaited innovation, but that may soon change based on a new report from South Korea. Industry sources indicate that Samsung Display is eager to dominate the rollable screen market, facing stiff competition from China’s display manufacturers in the foldable smartphone sector.

It is reported that Samsung Display is in talks with Samsung Electronics to provide rollable screens for a smartphone aimed at a release in the first half of 2028. This information has been backed by a Samsung Electronics official.

According to recent reports, the upcoming smartphone is likely to be named the Galaxy Z Slide, although Samsung has also trademarked the name Galaxy Z Roll, suggesting either title could be used. A market research firm has projected that this device will feature a 10-inch screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of 440.6 ppi, with a successor expected to launch in 2030.

While these developments sound promising, creating rollable screens poses greater manufacturing challenges compared to foldable ones due to their structural complexity. Nevertheless, Samsung Display has been investing in this technology for years. In 2023, the company showcased its initial concepts and has since provided panels for Lenovo's rollable laptops.

Unlike the foldable market, where BOE has managed to catch up and even surpass Samsung Display at times, the latter reportedly retains a significant lead in rollable technology. This positioning allows Samsung Display to control the market, at least in the initial stages. Therefore, it is crucial for Samsung Electronics to embrace this technology and make rollable-screen smartphones a reality.
