Apple is set to enhance parental control features for iPhones and iPads with the upcoming release of iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 this fall. As part of its commitment to ensuring a safer digital experience for children, Apple is introducing a comprehensive suite of tools that allows parents to supervise their children's device usage more effectively. The new controls aim to provide families with greater peace of mind by giving them the ability to manage app access, internet browsing, and screen time.
Setting Up a Child Account
The new parental control system begins with the creation of a child account, which simplifies the configuration process during device setup. Once established, age-appropriate restrictions are automatically applied, including limitations on adult websites, content restrictions, and age-based download permissions in the App Store.
Our approach to helping families create safer digital experiences is grounded in the belief that every child is unique.
Selecting Accessible Apps for Your Children
Once the child account is active, parents gain the ability to curate which apps are accessible to their children. They can choose from a limited selection of essential apps to start with, opt for a curated package, or individually select each app, allowing for gradual expansion as the child grows.
Introducing 'Ask to Browse' Feature
A new feature, 'Ask to Browse,' has been added, requiring children to seek permission from their parents before opening a new website in Safari. This functionality extends across all Apple devices, including iPhone, iPad, and Mac, enhancing web safety.
Communication Supervision
Parents will also be empowered to oversee their children’s communications through Messages, FaceTime, and Phone, with the option to approve new connections. Communication Safety, which is active by default for users under 18, will blur sensitive images and now includes measures to block violent content.
Innovative Screen Time Management Tools
The updated features include Time Allowances, enabling parents to set limits on the amount of time spent on various app categories such as Entertainment, Games, and Social Media. Additionally, Daily Schedules allow parents to control app access based on time of day, ensuring children remain focused during academics.
Comparing with Android's Controls
While these updates are significant, it's important to note that many of these capabilities have been available through Google's Family Link on Android for years, often free of charge. Apple's enhancements mark an effort to bridge this gap, with unique features like web approval via Safari providing an added advantage.
Availability of the New Features
These features will be accessible following the installation of the Screen Time update in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 this fall. Apple indicates that these features could evolve before their official release.
