Huawei nova 16z Introduces Satellite Messaging with Familiar Specs

Alongside the recently launched Huawei nova 16, 16 Pro, and 16 Ultra, Huawei introduced the nova 16z. This model is essentially an updated version of the nova 15 from last year, now featuring BeiDou satellite connectivity, but not much else has changed.

The nova 16z boasts a 6.7-inch OLED display with a resolution of 1,084 x 2,412 pixels, supporting 10-bit colors and protected by aluminosilicate glass. Unlike its predecessors, it is not equipped with an LTPO panel. Similarly, the camera setup remains unchanged, featuring a 50MP selfie camera (f/2.4), a 50MP main camera (f/1.9), and a 12MP telephoto lens (3x zoom, 69mm, RYYB sensor, f/2.4 lens with OIS).

The 6,000mAh battery with 100W wired charging and Kirin 8020 chipset continue from last year's model. In contrast, the nova 16 has adopted the same Kirin 9010S chip used in the Pro model. Configuration options include 12GB RAM with either 256GB or 512GB of storage.

A major upgrade featured in the nova 16z is the ability to send and receive messages, including photo messages, via the BeiDou satellite system. This functionality also allows users to seek emergency assistance and check weather conditions, even in remote areas.

For connectivity, the nova 16z includes dual-band Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, Huawei’s StarFlash technology as a Bluetooth alternative, and NFC. The USB-C port supports USB 2.0 data transfers. Positioning features include tri-band BeiDou, dual-band GPS, and Galileo. The fingerprint reader remains mounted on the side, consistent with prior models.

The Huawei nova 16z is available in three colors: Iridescent Mother of Pearl, White Sky, and Starry Night Black. Prices in China are set at CNY 2,700 for the 12/256GB version and CNY 3,200 for the 12/512GB version, equivalent to $400/€345 and $475/€405, respectively.
