DuckDuckGo Sees Surge in Popularity Following Google Search's AI Overhaul

Source: Date:

In the wake of Google's recent announcement about an AI-driven transformation of its Search platform, many users have started to seek alternatives that prioritize privacy and user control. This shift has notably benefited DuckDuckGo, a search engine known for its commitment to keeping user data private. As Google introduces new AI features, DuckDuckGo's popularity appears to be on the rise as users flock to it for a more traditional search experience without the integrated AI components.

Google Unveils AI Enhancements to Search

Google revealed its plans to enhance Google Search with AI capabilities, aiming to provide users with personalized experiences. New features will allow users to create and manage multiple AI agents that will continuously monitor topics of interest. These agents will operate round-the-clock, delivering updates directly through the Google app, such as alerts about concert tours for favorite bands.

Interestingly, such features might not be relevant for everyone. As one user humorously noted, with the loss of half of their favorite band's members over the decades, there wouldn't be much news to generate about tours, regardless of the supposed diligence of these information agents.

Amid these advancements, not all users are eager to embrace the AI integration. Some prefer searching without the interference of AI or targeted advertisements—this is where DuckDuckGo comes into play.

DuckDuckGo Experiences Growth Due to AI Introduction

In light of Google's AI announcements, DuckDuckGo experienced a notable increase in app installs. According to the company, there was an average week-over-week growth of 18.1% in app installations in the U.S. following the Google I/O event on May 19. On May 26, they reported a remarkable 30% surge in installs within a single day.

Installations on iOS devices were particularly robust, reflecting a 33% increase in app downloads, with a staggering 70% more iOS users installing DuckDuckGo's app compared to the day before Google I/O.

How DuckDuckGo Maintains User Privacy

DuckDuckGo's appeal lies in its commitment to user privacy, offering options to disable AI features across its search engine and applications on both Android and iOS. Users can easily adjust their settings to opt out of AI-driven experiences, a feature that resonates with those who prefer a straightforward search experience without AI assistance.

Disabling AI Features on DuckDuckGo

To disable AI features on DuckDuckGo's mobile app, users can navigate to the settings by tapping the three-line menu icon and selecting the AI features option under "Other Settings." This allows users to toggle the Duck.ai chatbot on or off and choose their preferred interface.

Where to Find DuckDuckGo

If you're interested in exploring DuckDuckGo, you can install the app on your device. The app is available for download on the App Store for iOS users or via the Google Play Store for Android users. Additionally, DuckDuckGo provides a VPN service for enhanced privacy while browsing.

Unlike many search engines, DuckDuckGo does not sell user data to advertisers, ensuring a secure and ad-free experience.
