Google's New Dialer Update Simplifies VoIP Calls on Android

Source: Date:

Android users who frequently make VoIP calls via applications such as WhatsApp, Telegram, or Messenger will soon enjoy the convenience of dialing contacts directly from their default phone dialer app. Google has been refining this feature for some time and is now poised for a broader rollout under the Calling Accounts domain.

According to the team at Android Authority, the new feature was successfully tested on a Pixel 9 using the latest Android Canary 2605 build. The Calling Accounts functionality can be found within the settings of the Phone by Google app, which serves as the native dialer for Pixel devices.

This update introduces a new option that enables third-party apps to be included in your call history. Consequently, users can dial contacts from these apps without switching to the respective VoIP application to make calls.

The feature leverages Android's telecom framework, allowing third-party applications to register their calls, enabling them to appear in the native phone app just like regular cellular calls. It will be accessible on any device running Android 16.1 or higher.
