Apple Delays Vision Pro Sequel as Focus Shifts to Augmented Reality and AI
In a move that signals a shift in priorities, Apple has decided to delay the launch of a sequel to its Vision Pro headset. Originally anticipated to follow soon after the first model, recent reports indicate that the company is now concentrating its resources on augmented reality (AR) technology and artificial intelligence (AI), suggesting that innovative advancements in these fields will take precedence over new headset development.
Vision Pro Sequel On Hold
The Vision Pro headset has proven to be a bold yet commercially challenging venture for Apple. Recent insights from Bloomberg highlight that, while there are ideas for a low-cost version of the headset, the company is currently deprioritizing the development of a next-generation enclosed headset. According to Apple analyst Mark Gurman, a new Vision Pro-like device will not be expected for at least two years; the existing model is priced at $3,499 per unit.
Current Focus: AR and AI
Apple’s current strategic objectives are aimed at enhancing its augmented reality capabilities and integrating more advanced AI features within its products. These areas are seen as critical for the company’s future growth and innovation, positioning the Vision Pro as a preliminary step towards more accessible AR glasses.
visionOS Under Maintenance
As part of this redirection, Apple is placing visionOS into a maintenance mode. The upcoming visionOS 27 update is expected to emphasize bug fixes, performance improvements, and better interoperability, rather than introducing significant new features.
A Vision Pro sequel is not currently at the forefront of Apple's innovation agenda.
