Introducing a New Fee for Connecticut's Postpaid Wireless Customers
Beginning next year, postpaid customers of T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon in Connecticut will soon notice an additional fee on their monthly bills. This change aims to support firefighters affected by occupational cancers. While some customers may have initially thought they could opt out, recent updates to the legislation have made this charge mandatory for all affected subscribers.
Beginning on January 1, 2027, T-Mobile subscribers in Connecticut will see a new 5-cent monthly fee per line added to their bills. The Connecticut General Assembly approved this initiative to provide wage replacement, supplemental income, and medical benefits to firefighters who have developed cancer due to exposure to hazardous materials in their line of work.
The Legislative Background
The law mandates that telecommunication companies collect this fee, which will be listed on bills similar to the existing 911 surcharge. Although initial proposals allowed subscribers the option to opt out, this was later retracted, making the fee compulsory for all postpaid lines statewide.
Fee Details
According to sSB 1318, named "An Act Assessing A Certain Fee For Deposit Into The Firefighters Cancer Relief Account," all non-prepaid lines must incur this fee. Each telecom provider, including T-Mobile, will manage the collection and ensure the funds are deposited into the Firefighters Cancer Relief Account, which will be forwarded to the Office of the State Treasurer by the 15th of each month.
As one dissatisfied Reddit user expressed, "I don’t care if it’s 5 cents; I didn’t ask for this, and it feels like I should have an option to opt out." For T-Mobile accounts, which can hold a maximum of 12 lines, the highest possible charge for this fee is 60 cents per month.
It’s important to note that this charge only affects postpaid subscribers; thus, most MVNO customers will not be subject to the fee. In addition, both AT&T and Verizon postpaid customers will also see this fee implemented in their monthly statements.
