According to a recent report, Apple's anticipated AirPods featuring built-in cameras have reached the final stages of testing. These next-generation earbuds were first mentioned in February of this year.

Mark Gurman, citing sources familiar with the developments, indicates that the upcoming AirPods are currently in the design validation testing (DVT) phase. Prototypes are being tested internally within the company.

Following the DVT phase, which is the final stage of development, the AirPods will transition to production validation testing (PVT), during which initial mass-production units will be manufactured.

Gurman notes that although the hardware design is nearing completion, potential delays could arise if Apple is not satisfied with the AI experience. The AirPods were initially expected to launch in the first half of the year, but delays related to updates in Siri have pushed the timeline back.

These AirPods, potentially referred to as AirPods Ultra based on a recent leak, are expected to utilize the camera functionality to enhance Siri's understanding of the user's environment. Gurman also mentions that while the design will closely resemble the current AirPods Pro 3, the stems may be slightly elongated to accommodate the camera hardware.
